Heroes of Jin Yong

Jin Yong is a famous Wuxia novel writer in China. And Heroes of Jin Yong is my favourite videogame for Wuxia theme.

According to Wikipedia:

Heroes of Jin Yong (金庸群俠傳), first published in 1996, is a tactical role-playing game based on the storyline and characters in Jin Yong's Wuxia novels, developed by Heluo (now Oriental Algorithm System).

In the game, the player takes on the role of present-day protagonist, who wakes up one day to find himself in the ancient Chinese Jianghu (martial arts world). The player learns that in order to return to modern society, he must find all the fourteen novels by Jin Yong and be declared champion of the Jianghu. The books are scattered around the Jianghu and the player must interact with many characters from the novels, each with his / her own story to tell. Some characters are friendly and willing to help the player in his quest, while others are hostile and fight with him. The player must learn his own martial arts in order to coerce or persuade others to give him the books. There are a wide variety of martial arts styles and weapons available, including sword, saber, whip, and palm styles. The player can also choose to follow a righteous or evil path through his actions and deeds, with different reactions from characters depending on what path he takes.

When I first played this game back to late 1990s, I felt every thing was amazing. Player can walk around and interact with those famous names form Jin Yong's novels, and even invite them as a team member. Also player can choose to become hero or evil, this will influence the friendship between player and NPCs. For example, if player help some bad guy (mostly defined in Jin Yong's novels), finish their quest, after that player can invite some bad guys to his/her team, for good guys, will refuse players invitation, sometimes even fighting with player. And also this will lead to different endings of the game, different storyline, different quests sequences and different Bosses in the end.

This image shows the relationships of most heroes or evils in Jin Yong's novels(Sorry I can only find Chinese version). While player playing the game, these relationships will influence player's decision and consequences of the choices.

This game inspired me a lot for our idea of Wuxia game. It's a very good model for players to make choice and develop their own storyline, emerge their own game. However, this is game is quite old actually, the interact was very limited in the game, the relationship between player and NPCs was quite sample - only two choices hero or evil. In fact, in Jin Yong's novels of wuxia world was never that sample. Also one step further, we can even record all storyline in text, and players can keep their own legends in a storybook, that must be very interesting.
